How to create good communication skill for a college student

Our interpersonal relationship relies on communication, which helps us to build a good relationship. Speaking is important for us to connect with people in our daily life. For many students, communication helps them not only in their studies but also a personal relationship with friends or in the workplace. According to the process of our conversation, fully understanding what others are saying [1], expressing your thoughts and emotions appropriately [2], and trying to build a friendly rapport with people [3] are important for successful communication. On the other hand, not following these three aspects, you might encounter challenges in communication and my own experience as a witness in a painful way.

First, we need to understand what others are talking about, and we should give others a reply to show what we have already understood for others, such as we could say” Ok” to respond to other’s talking that we’ve understood. Then, being able to give feedback means, we have no problem understanding others. If we could not understand others, we should also ask others to repeat that the message again. This is one crucial ingredient for the whole process of good communication. Second, when we make a conversation with others or friends, we could feel other’s emotions with the message from their countenance — delight, anger, sorrow, and happiness, etc. when we see something about someone ‘else’s appearance as well. That is why we usually emphasized that we need to communicate face to face with people. If we did not express our thought and emotion, people would never know what you are thinking. All of this will lead to a big misunderstanding. Third, we would like to establish a friendly rapport with people further and the premise to have good communication that we need to have. Building a rapport can be natural through the form of a harmonious relationship between people. It happens at beginning of a conversation with somebody who would make a great impression of you. You should be patient and empathetic and show care, and concern for what others are saying. If we do not build a close rapport, we would not have a good interpersonal relationship. What was discussed above can truly help us when we need to communicate face-to-face with others to connect to people, our society, or any community we are in, e.g., in a class, in a school club; on the other hand, we are even in the workplace.

According to my experience, I did not do well in these three points so that I cannot foster good communication. I always think that I am not good at verbal expression so that I could not have a good interpersonal relationship I usually stuttered so that people would not patiently listen to me when talking I was. Besides, I sometimes did not exactly receive and understand the exact meaning of the message from others. Even though I carefully listened to the speaker, I would omit something in detail in the information. For example, when our teacher asked us to select three topics for three essays by ourselves, but I got the requirement mixed up as three topics in one essay, so I had to rewrite my essay this week. I think something like this happened to me once, it will continue to happen again to me in the future. I sorted out lots of problems between my teacher and me in communication. After this lesson, I should cautiously check for what I listening to from my teacher’s requirement. I recently found out myself to the learning disabled, which I could not immediately comprehend my teacher’s comment. All of the above are my stories: I initially could not understand the teacher’s comment, but I didn’t ask the teacher to repeat again because of fear and shyness. I made the mistake at the beginning, not to mention getting the other two points right. When I discuss the essay with the teacher, I did not express my thought, she could only guess what I wanted to write on the essay so that there is some discrepancy between our thinking about the essay. The last point is I seldom talk to a stranger or new friend; I could not build a close rapport with people further. I don’t have a good interpersonal relationship so far. These problems are enough evidence that I can’t do well with the three points to create a good communicative skill.

It was an awful experience that I realized the reasons good communication skills are important for college students. These days, I have known avoiding communication with teachers affects my learning condition. I could not bear the heavy burden of assignments in reading and writing class for this semester. I have a huge long way to go with difficulties and challenges for the class. I am still trying to find a suitable learning style for me to overcome my difficult situation.
